There are five mahapurusha yogas, collectively called Pancha mahapurusha yogas. The five true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – create each of the five mahapurusha yogas. Jupiter forms the Hamsa mahapurusha yoga. There are two requirements for this yoga
Jupiter is in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation
Jupiter is in a kendra (1,4,7,10) house from the lagna (ascendant) or the Moon
Mahapurusha yogas pertain to success achieved through action. Therefore, classical texts indicate Kendras because they are the houses of action. If the yoga repeats from the ascendant and the Moon it is doubly strong because it indicates confluence. It is a strong placement even if the planet is in a trikona (5,9) house.
The qualities of the yoga are directly related to the qualities of Jupiter. Therefore, one born with Hamsa mahapurusha yoga will be a King, a person in high political office or a government dignitary. He/she will be prosperous, will enjoy pleasures of life, will possess good vehicles and will be renowned and learned.
Examples – For example, Pope John Paul II has this yoga. He was the head of the Roman Catholic Church, thereby exemplifying the characteristics of this yoga. He was the head of the Vatican, he was learned in the scriptures, and enjoyed good vehicles.
Pope John Paul II Exalted Jupiter in the 10th house from ascendant
Another example is Elizabeth Taylor. She has this yoga from her Moon sign. She lived life like a Queen.
There are five mahapurusha yogas, collectively called Pancha mahapurusha yogas. The five true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – create each of the five mahapurusha yogas. Mercury forms the Bhadra mahapurusha yoga. There are two requirements for this yoga
Mercury is in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation
Mercury is in a kendra (1,4,7,10) house from the lagna (ascendant) or the Moon
Mahapurusha yogas pertain to success achieved through action. Therefore, classical texts indicate Kendras because they are the houses of action. If the yoga repeats from the ascendant and the Moon it is doubly strong because it indicates confluence. It is a strong placement even if the planet is in a trikona (5,9) house.
The qualities of the yoga are directly related to the qualities of Mercury. Therefore, one born with Bhadra mahapurusha yoga is intelligent and eloquent in speech. He or she is learned, rich, and prosperous.
For example, Agatha Christie is a good example of this yoga. She was prolific writer. Agatha Christie is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the best selling novelist of all time. She also wrote the world’s longest running play, “The Mousetrap”.
Agatha Christie Mercury exalted/own sign in the 10th house from ascendant
Other examples include Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. They are both very rich and intelligent.
Bill Gates Mercury exalted/own sign in the 4th house from ascendant
Warren Buffet Mercury exalted/own sign in 10th house from ascendant
There are five mahapurusha yogas, collectively called Pancha mahapurusha yogas. The five true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – create each of the five mahapurusha yogas. Venus forms the Malavya mahapurusha yoga. There are two requirements for this yoga
Venus is in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation
Venus is in a kendra (1,4,7,10) house from the lagna (ascendant) or the Moon
Mahapurusha yogas pertain to success achieved through action. Therefore, classical texts indicate Kendras because they are the houses of action. If the yoga repeats from the ascendant and the Moon it is doubly strong because it indicates confluence. It is a strong placement even if the planet is in a trikona (5,9) house.
The qualities of the yoga are directly related to the qualities of Venus. Therefore, one born with Malavya mahapurusha yoga will be very rich and prosperous. He/she will enjoy pleasures of life, will have a good spouse and children, and will be fortunate. He/she will possess good vehicles and will be renowned and learned.
Examples
For example, Leonardo Da Vinci is a good example of this yoga. Venus is naturally associated with the Arts.
Leonardo Da Vinci Venus in its own sign in the 7th house from lagna
Other examples include King Henry VII and Vincent Van Gogh
King Henri VIII Venus in its own sign in the 10th house from lagna
Vincent Van Gogh Venus is exalted in the 10th house from the lagna
Steven Spielberg and John F Kennedy have Malavya yogas when taken from the Moon.
Steven Spielberg Venus in its own sign in the 1st house from the Moon Venus is also in the 5th house (trikona) from the ascendant
John F Kennedy Venus in its own sign in the 10th house from Moon Venus is also in the 9th house (trikona) from the ascendant
There are five mahapurusha yogas, collectively called Pancha mahapurusha yogas. The five true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – create each of the five mahapurusha yogas. Mars forms the Ruchaka mahapurusha yoga. There are two requirements for this yoga
Mars is in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation
Mars is in a kendra (1,4,7,10) house from the lagna (ascendant) or the Moon
Mahapurusha yogas pertain to success achieved through action. Therefore, classical texts indicate Kendras because they are the houses of action. If the yoga repeats from the ascendant and the Moon it is doubly strong because it indicates confluence. It is a strong placement even if the planet is in a trikona (5,9) house.
The qualities of the yoga are directly related to the qualities of Mars. Therefore, one born with Ruchaka mahapurusha yoga will be powerful, adventurous, and successful as a commander-in-chief. He/she will acquire wealth and become famous performing courageous deeds and conquering enemies.
Examples
For example, Adolph Hitler epitomizes this yoga albeit in an infamous sense.
Adolph Hitler Mars in its own house and in the 7th house from the ascendant
Another example, Kapil Dev and Monica Seles are two positive examples of Ruchaka yoga at work. Kapil Dev was the daring Indian cricketer who captained India to its first world cup in 1983. Monica Seles was the powerful tennis player who ruled the tennis world in the early 90s.
Karako bhava nasti is an interesting and counter intuitive concept in vedic astrology. Karako derives from the word “karak” or doer/significator. Every graha signifies something. For example, Sun signifies the father. Moon signifies the mother… Every bhava or house also signifies something. For example, the 9th house signifies the father and the 4th house signifies the mother. You would assume having the Sun in the 9th or the Moon in the 4th would enhance the appropriate significance because the graha and the house signify the same thing. However, the “karako bhava nasti” principle states that the significance will be destroyed (nasti). Too much of anything can be harmful!
There are, however, exceptions to this rule. The exceptions are
Graha is exalted or in its own sign – fully cancels the negative effect. Jupiter in Pisces for a Scorpio lagna or Moon in Cancer for an Aries lagna.
Graha is retrograde – fully cancels the negative effect.
Jupiter conjuncts or aspects the affected house – reduces the negative effect depending on how strong Jupiter is.
Trikona lords (1,5,9) conjuncts or aspects the house – reduces the negative effect depending on how strong the Trikona lords are.
This concept is used mainly for relations. It could mean troubled relationships, separation, or friction in general.
Sun in 9th (bad for father)
Moon in 4th (bad for mother)
Mars in 3rd (bad for siblings)
Venus in 7th (bad for wife)
Jupiter in 5th (bad for children)
Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi
In Rahul Gandhi’s chart we have Venus in the 7th house. This affects his relationship with his wife. Rahul Gandhi has not married.
Sean Penn
Sean Penn
In Sean Penn’s chart Sun is in the 9th house. This technically is “karako bhava nasti” indicating troubles with his dad. However, his chart has many of the exceptions that are highlighted above. Sun is in its own sign in Leo. A strong Jupiter aspects the 9th house. The lords of the 1st and 5th house (Jupiter and Mars) also aspect the 9th house. Sean Penn appears to have had a great relationship with his father.
Nabhasa yogas are formed based on the spatial distribution of the grahas in the sky. These yogas exclude Rahu and Ketu because they are not real or visible objects in the sky. Therefore, these yogas are formed by the distribution of the seven true grahas – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn – in the vedic chart. Nabhasa yogas form backdrops in one’s life and their effects can be felt throughout, in all the dasa periods.
These yogas do not consider the strength of the grahas and so, are not considered important by many. However, many of these yogas are statistically rare and should be given their due importance. The most common of these yogas are the Sankhya yogas. The number of signs occupied by the seven grahas determines the Sankhya yoga. Therefore, there are seven such yogas one for each of the 7 possibilities – all 7 grahas can be in 1 sign, in 2 signs, … , in 7 signs. Every vedic chart will have one of the Sankhya yogas – especially Kedara(4), Paasa(5), and Dama(6) are very common. That is why it is said that Sankhya yogas should be ignored if any of the other Nabhasa yogas are present.
There are 32 of these yogas, based on the distribution of the 7 grahas (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) in the 12 signs/houses. There are three Asraya yogas (3), two Dala yogas (2), twenty Akriti yogas (20), and seven Sankhya yogas (7). You can click the headings below to get more details about the sets of yogas including their results and example charts.
Placement of the seven grahas in specific houses form these yogas. Some of these look at the placement of benefics and malefics in specific houses, while the rest look at the placement of all the seven grahas in specific houses. Thirteen of the 22 give good results, while the other nine give bad results.
Looking at the placement of benefics and malefics
Maala – benefics occupy 3 angles/Kendra houses
Bhujanga or Sarpa – malefics occupy 3 angles
Vajra – all benefics in (1,7) or all malefics in (4,10)

Nabhasa Dala and Akriti yogas are based on the placement of the seven visible grahas, excluding Rahu and Ketu, in houses. There are 22 of these combinations – two under Dala yogas and the rest (20) under Akriti yogas.
Placement of Benefics and Malefics
Four of the Nabhasa Dala and Akriti yogas look at the placement of the benefics and the malefics. You can refer to the article on natural benefics and malefics to determine the grahas to consider. For simplicity, you can assume Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the waxing Moon as benefics and Saturn, Mars, Sun, and the waning Moon as malefics.

Nabhasa yogas represent pattern of grahas in the sky. There are four groups of these yogas – Asraya (3), Dala (2), Akriti (20), and Sankhya (7). In this blog we look at Nabhasa Asraya yogas.
There are three Nabhasa Asraya Yogas. These are based on the placement of the seven (excluding Rahu and Ketu) visible grahas in movable, fixed, or dual houses. The three Nabhasa Asraya yogas are:
Rajju yoga occurs if all the seven grahas are in movable signs – Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. A person with Rajju yoga will be fond of wandering and will earn in foreign countries. He or she will also be charming, yet cruel and mischievous.
Musala yoga occurs if all the seven grahas are in fixed signs – Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Such individuals are firm in disposition. They are also famous, wise, and wealthy.
Nala yoga occurs if all the seven grahas are in dual signs – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Such individuals will be interested in accumulating money, very helpful and charming.
All three yogas are positive especially for wealth and fame. They are also very rare. These yogas are easy to identify in a chart. In fact, most of the Nabhasa yogas are easy to identify in a chart because they form specific patterns in the chart.
Nabhasa Sankhya yogas are seven yogas formed when the visible grahas (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) occupy 1 through 7 different signs. Rahu and Ketu are not included. These are Vallaki or Veena (7), Dharma (6), Pasha (5), Kedara (4), Shula (3), Yuga (2), and Gola (1). If the visible grahas occupy more than three signs it is good. If the visible grahas occupy three, two, or one sign it is bad.
Nabhasa yogas, in general, represent pattern of grahas in the sky. There are four groups of these yogas – Asraya (3), Dala (2), Akriti (20), and Sankhya (7). In this blog we look at Nabhasa Sankhya yogas.
The Sankya yogas are very generic and most charts will have the visible planets in 4 or 5 signs. Hence they are not given much importance. It is rare to have all visible grahas in one or two signs.

Vedic astrology provides a method to predict family members’ chart from a native’s main (D-1) chart. If you want to analyze the spouse’s chart, you would consider the 7th house as the lagna and read the chart. This is because the 7th house represents the native’s spouse.
To analyze all family members you only have to remember the following house significations
3rd house – immediately younger sibling
4th house – mother
5th house – first child
7th house – spouse
9th house – father
11th house – immediately older sibling
You can then apply these in sequence to find other relatives. For example, maternal grandfather is the mother’s father. So, you analyze from the 12th house as the lagna because the 12th house is the 9th house (father) from the 4th house (mother). Remember to always count inclusively in vedic astrology. Similarly, paternal grandmother would be 4th from the 9th house, which again is the 12th house. You take the quickest route, using the relations given above, to get to the person. To get to your mother’s father you don’t use – mother’s mother’s spouse.
When there are multiples – siblings, children, you start with the nearest and move from there until you reach the individual. The first child will be the 5th house. The second child is the younger sibling (3rd from) of the first child, so this would be 3rd from the 5th house or the 7th house. The next child will be the younger sibling of the 2nd child, so this would be 3rd from the 7th house or the 9th house. For siblings, the 3rd house from the native would be the younger sibling closest in age to the native. The 3rd from the 3rd would be the next younger sibling. The 11th house represents the elder sibling closest in age to the native. The 11th from the 11th would be the next elder sibling.
To predict family members like in-laws you would start with the spouse and sequence from there until you find the relation. Father-in-law would be 9th from 7th or 3rd. Mother-in-law would be 4th from 7th or 10th.
This approach is not always reciprocal. 7th is the house of spouse and 7th from 7th, or the 1st house, is the spouse’s spouse, you – this works! However, 4th is the house of mother and 5th from the 4th, or 8th, is the mother’s child. This should be you (1st house) if you are the only child!
There are only 12 houses, so many relations will be analyzed from the same house. For example, the following are some relations that would be analyzed from the 1st house (same as the native)
The native (you)
Sixth younger sibling
Sixth older sibling
Father’s second younger sibling
Spouse’s younger sister’s first child
