Prince Harry Vedic Chart

Backdrop of the chart

The Rasis and Nakshatras provide the backdrop of a chart. In Prince Harry’s chart, the ascendant, ascendant lord, Moon, and Sun are in Fire signs. This indicates a lot of energy and a need for action. Sagittarius indicates a just nature, a need for freedom, and a desire to achieve something big. Sun in Leo gives him aristocracy and the natural ability to win over people’s hearts. Moon in Aries makes him aggressive and impetuous. The key nakshatras are Krittika (Moon), Moola (Jupiter), Sun (Uttaraphalguni), and Purvaashada (ascendant). Krittika gives him a sharp and cutting nature. Moola indicates struggles and brings out the contrarian in him. Uttaraphalguni makes him generous, and finally, Purvaashada provides the will power to seek improvement.

Strength of Lagna (ascendant)

The lagna is the most important point in vedic astrology. Prince Harry’s lagna is in the sign of Sagittarius. This makes him just, someone who seeks freedom, and someone who aims high. The symbolism of an archer ready to fire is apt for Sagittarians. The lord of the ascendant is Jupiter. Jupiter is in its moolatrikona sign in the first house. This forms a very strong mahapurusha yoga – hamsa yoga. Prince Harry embodies a lot of the characteristics of this yoga. Obviously, the lagna is very strong.

Nature of the Mind (Moon)

The Moon represents the mind. In Prince Harry’s chart Moon is in the fifth house and in the nakshatra of Krittika. The fifth house is the house of creativity and children among other things. Moon and the fifth house are aspected by a strong malefic, Saturn and a strong benefic, Jupiter. The lord of the fifth house, Mars, is in the twelveth house conjoint Ketu and aspected by Rahu. Although Mars is in his own sign and in its sign of exaltation in the Navamsa, the influence of Rahu and Ketu and the presence in the 12th house reduce the strength of Mars.

Krittaka nakshatra’s symbol is a sharp razor. This makes the mind sharp and acerbic. Therefore, the mind is caustic and can be easily influenced. In his chart, Rahu, Ketu, and Saturn affect the Moon or its lord. Also, Rahu, Ketu, and Saturn are all in their signs of exaltation. This makes their influence very strong.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The chart has a strong first house as already indicated. The 9th house is also very strong. Here Sun is in its own house and is conjunct Mercury, the lord of the 10th house. Sun and Mercury form budha adithya yoga and more importantly the most powerful dharma karmadhipati yoga (conjunction of 9th and 10th lords). This makes Prince Harry fortunate and shows interest in higher learning and spirituality. Jupiter also aspects the 9th house.

The weaknesses are in the 5th house, the 6-12 axis, and a debilitated Venus. Prince Harry can be easily influenced by the wrong company and he could face deceit from friends multiple times in his life.

Key events

Prince Harry lost his mother during Mo/Ke period. He was embroiled in controversy about wearing a Nazi uniform in his Ma/Ke period. He married in Ra/Ke period. The birth of his first son and his decision to leave the royal family were in the Ra/Ve period. These events happened when the weak points in his chart were activated.

Future

His marriage with Megan will not last for long. He will struggle through the rest of his Rahu mahadasha (ending in Mar 2025). He will move back to the UK and support his brother. His Jupiter period from 2025 to 2041 will bring him fame and respect.

Famous artists vedic charts

Famous artists vedic charts

Can vedic charts indicate fame in the field of art? We look at the vedic charts of some of the most famous artists to look for similarities. The list includes

  • Auguste Rodin
  • Auguste Renoir
  • Leonardo Da Vinci
  • Henri Matisse
  • Vincent Van Gogh

In vedic astrology the 5th house represents creativity. The 1st house represents the self and therefore fame. So, a combination of the 1st and 5th house indicates fame through creative works. The 1st and 5th houses and their lords should be strong as well. Venus is the natural significator of the arts. Therefore, a strong and well placed Venus is desired. Finally, Saraswati yoga is the yoga for fine arts. Charts with this yoga indicate success in the arts.

Saraswati yoga forms when Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury are in 1,2,4,5,7,9, or 11 houses. In addition, Jupiter is in its sign of exaltation, in its own sign, or in a friend’s sign. You can see the yoga from the ascendant or the Moon. All five famous artists vedic charts have Saraswati yoga.

Auguste Rodin

Auguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin (Nov 12th 1840, 12:00, Paris, France)

Rodin’s chart has Saraswati yoga – Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury in the 11th house. Jupiter is in a friend’s (Mars) house. In his chart, the lord of the 1st house (Saturn) and the lord of the 5th house (Venus) are conjunct in the 11th house of gains. Venus, the karaka of the Arts, is involved in the 1/5 conjunction and Saraswati yoga. The first and fifth houses are aspected by their respective lords, adding strength to the houses.

The 1st and 5th house lords are also conjunct in the Navamsa. Venus is in its sign of exaltation and the conjunction is in the 3rd house of skills.

Auguste Renoir

Auguste Renoir
Auguste Renoir (February 25th 1841, 6 am, Limoges, France)

Renoir’s chart also has Saraswati yoga, albeit from the Moon. The lord of the 5th house is Venus. Venus forms a maha parivartana yoga with Mars (lords of 4th and 10th). Venus is also vargottama giving it more strength. Additionally, the 4th and 5th lords are conjunct in the 1st house when seen from the Moon sign.

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (December 31st 1869, 8 pm, Le Cateau, France)

Matisse’s is the 3rd chart with Saraswati yoga. His forms from the ascendant in the Rasi chart. The lord of the 5th house (Jupiter) aspects the 5th house. From the Moon sign, the lords of the 1st and 5th houses aspect their own houses respectively. The lord of the 1st house is in the 5th house establishing a sambhandha between the 1st and 5th houses.

Vincent Van Gogh

Famous artists vedic charts
Vincent Van Gogh (March 30th 1853, 11 am, Zundert, Netherlands)

Van Gogh’s chart is another example with Saraswati yoga. In his case Jupiter is in its own sign as well. This makes the Saraswati yoga stronger. His 5th lord (Venus) is in its sign of exaltation conjunct the 3rd lord (Sun) of skills.

Van Gogh has the 1st lord and 5th lords conjunct when seen from the Arudha lagna. Van Gogh was not successful in his lifetime and was seen as a failure. Perhaps, others viewed him as a greater artist than he himself did.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Famous artists vedic charts
Leonardo Da Vinci (April 14th, 1452, 9:40 pm, Vinci, Italy)

Da Vinci’s chart has Saraswati yoga as well. Jupiter is not in a friend’s sign, but Jupiter is vargottama, giving it strength. The 1st lord (Mars) is in its sign of exaltation in the 3rd house of skills. The lords of the 1st (Saturn) and 5th (mercury) mutually aspect each other when seen from the Moon. Venus, the karaka for arts, is in its own house aspecting the ascendant.

Additionally, the lords of the 1st and 5th houses also mutually aspect each other in the Navamsa. Venus is also in its sign of exaltation in the Navamsa.

Gaja Kesari Yoga

Gaja Kesari Yoga

Gaja Kesari Yoga is one of the most famous yogas in vedic astrology. The simplest form of this yoga only requires Jupiter and Moon to be at angles to each other. The simplest form is very common and is found in 25% of the charts. Therefore, the yoga is very popular. However, the definition in Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra requires more factors.

  1. Jupiter is in an angle from the ascendant or the Moon
  2. Jupiter is conjunct or aspected by another benefic
  3. Additionally, Jupiter is not combust, in its sign of debilitation, or in an inimical sign

Jupiter is inimical to Venus and Mercury and is debilitated in Capricorn. Therefore, Jupiter cannot be in Capricorn, Taurus, Libra, Gemini, and Virgo. The only other benefics are Venus and Mercury. Therefore, one or both of them should be conjunct with or in the seventh house from Jupiter.

Results of the yoga

The native born with Gaja Kesari Yoga is splendorous, wealthy, intelligent, and virtuous. This one yoga in a chart can cancel all the bad yogas in the chart.

Here are some example charts that have all the factors mentioned in BPHS

Mahatma Gandhi

In Mahatma Gandhi’s chart, Jupiter is in an angle from the ascendant (7th house) and the Moon (10th house). Venus and Mercury aspect Jupiter. Jupiter is not combust, in its sign of debilitation, or in an inimical sign.

Rajiv Gandhi

In Rajiv Gandhi’s chart, Jupiter is in an angle from Moon (1st house). Jupiter is conjunct Venus and Mercury. Jupiter is not combust (more than 6 degrees away from the Sun), in its sign of debilitation, or in an inimical sign.

Julia Roberts

The configuration in Julia Robert’s chart is very similar to that in Rajiv Gandhi’s. Jupiter is in an angle from the Moon (1st house). Venus is conjunct Jupiter. Jupiter is not combust, in its sign of debilitation, or in an inimical sign. In her chart, Jupiter is clearly not combust.

Gauri Yoga

Gauri yoga

Gauri yoga forms when three conditions satisfy

  • Moon is in his own house or in his sign or exaltation
  • Moon is in a Kendra or Trikona from the ascendant
  • Jupiter aspects the Moon

The native with Gauri yoga has a beautiful body and is a friend of the King. He or she possesses good qualities and belongs to an illustrious family. Others praise the native for his or her successes. The yoga is an auspicious yoga. A strong Moon, in general, adds strength to a chart. Jupiter’s aspect on the Moon or the lagna is also desirable as a rule of thumb.

For Example – Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria exemplifies this yoga. She has Moon in its sign of exaltation. Her Moon is in the first house, a Kendra and a Trikona. Finally, her Jupiter aspects her Moon. Therefore, her chart satisfies all the conditions for Gauri yoga.

Queen Victoria

For Example – Barack Obama

Barack Obama has a similar combination. He also has his Moon in its sign of exaltation. His Moon is in the fifth house, a Trikona house. Finally, his Jupiter also aspects his Moon. Therefore, his chart also satisfies all the conditions for this yoga.

Barack Obama

In both examples, Jupiter is debilitated. This, however, does not impact the definition of this yoga.

Here are links to some of the critical yogas in vedic astrology. I grouped Gauri under wealth because I did not create a category for auspicious yogas. The benefits of the yoga enable the generation of wealth.

Exalted Retrograde

Exalted Retrograde

As explained in the Retrograde blog, retrograde adds strength to the planet. An exalted retrograde planet becomes doubly strong. If the planet is benefic in the chart, the results are very positive. If the planet is malefic in the chart, the results are very negative.

Joe Biden

For example, Joe Biden’s chart has an exalted retrograde Jupiter. His Jupiter dasha runs from 2006 to 2022. Jupiter is the lord of his 2nd and 5th house, placed in his 9th house. Jupiter is, therefore, a benefic in his chart. The exalted-retrograde status of Jupiter makes it very benefic for him.

Biden declared his candidacy for Presidency in 2007 and later ran as the Vice President with Obama in 2008. The Obama-Biden ticket won the election in 2008 and Biden was sworn in as Vice President in 2009. Biden served as the Vice President for 8 years, from 2009 to 2017. In 2019, Biden announced that he would run for President. He is the leading democratic candidate, at the time of this blog, and has a good shot of becoming the President in 2020. Biden’s first bid for the Presidency was in 1998. If he wins in 2020, he would have achieved his goal after 22 years and in his retrograde-exalted Jupiter dasha!

Joe Biden Jupiter Exalted Retrograde
Joe Biden

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor has a very similar Jupiter to Joe Biden. Therefore, in her case as well, Jupiter is very benefic and extra strong. She was born in Jupiter dasha, which lasted until 1944.

Elizabeth was born into a rich American family living in London. She was raised in an exclusive circle with rich family friends. In 1939 she moved to United States because of the impending war and the family settled in the rich neighborhood of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. Liz Taylor started her acting career in 1941 and was a very successful child artist from 1941 and 1944. She obviously went on to become one of the most famous actresses in Hollywood. Her Jupiter dasha was very good.

Elizabeth Taylor

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa has the ascendant lord, Saturn, exalted-retrograde in the 9th house. Saturn is a benefic in his chart. Sri Ramakrishna ran Saturn dasha from 1949 to 1968.

Sri Ramakrishna moved to Calcutta in 1852 and saw the vision of Goddess Kali in 1855. All his spiritual learnings came during the Saturn dasha.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh has Mercury in its own sign and retrograde. Mercury in Amitabh’s chart is the lord of the 8th house in the 8th house. It is conjunct with two malefics – Sun and Mars. Mercury is also conjunct with a debilitated Venus. Mercury can be considered a malefic in his chart. The retrograde position, therefore, makes Mercury extra malefic.

Mercury dasha ran from 1990 to 2007. By 1990, his acting career was on the decline and he retired from acting in 1992. In 1996 he started ABCL, which ran into losses and had a financial collapse in 1997. From 2000 to 2007, Amitabh starred in some films and hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati. The successes in this period were muted in comparison to the fame he had prior to 1990. Amitabh’s fortunes did do much better after 2007.

Debilitated Retrograde

Debilitated Retrograde

As explained in the Retrograde blog, retrograde adds strength to the planet. A benefic planet, in a chart, becomes more benefic and a malefic planet, in a chart, becomes more malefic. In this blog, we look at charts that have debilitated-retrograde planets.

Barack Obama

In Barack Obama‘s chart, Jupiter is Retrograde and Debilitated. Jupiter dasha ran from 1996 to 2012. Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996. He became the state Senator in 2005. He won the Presidency in 2008 for the first time and won his reelection campaign in 2012. Obviously, Jupiter also has Dig Bala, is in the ascendant, and is part of a number of yogas. His chart is an example of a natural benefic giving very good results when the planet is retrograde.

Barack Obama

Agatha Christie

For example, Agatha Christie has a Debilitated Retrograde Jupiter. Christie holds the Guinness World record for the best-selling novelist of all time. She ran Jupiter dasha from 1922 to 1938. Agatha’s writing career started in all earnest in 1922. She wrote her second novel in 1922 and went on her first around-the-world tour to promote her books in the same year. She introduced Hercule Poirot in 1923 and Miss Marple in 1927. By 1938, Agatha Christie had written 24 books (23 books in the Jupiter Dasha of 16 years!) and was firmly established as one of the greatest mystery writers. Agatha’s first husband divorced her in 1926, but she married her second husband in 1930 and they lived a happy married life for 46 years until Christie’s death. Agatha Christie’s chart is a great example of the strength of a retrograde planet because Jupiter does not have other supportive factors in the chart.

Agatha Christie

Bruce Lee

For example, Bruce Lee has retrograde Jupiter and Saturn. We will focus on Saturn because it is debilitated and retrograde in his chart. Bruce Lee ran Saturn dasha from 1959 to 1978. Lee moved to the United States in 1959 and started teaching martial arts the same year. He received his high-school diploma in 1960. Lee starred in “The Big Boss” in 1971, in “Fist of Fury” in 1972, and in “Enter the Dragon” in 1973. Although, Bruce Lee died in 1973, his fame was attained in his Saturn dasha.

Bruce Lee

Louis Pasteur

For example, Louis Pasteur has a debilitated-retrograde Saturn in his chart. His Saturn dasha ran from 1862 to 1881. He also has a retrograde Jupiter which ran from 1846 to 1862. Louis Pasteur is known for vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. In 1862, he patented the process, we now know as pasteurization. In 1879 he performed inoculation, in 1880 he invented vaccination, and in 1881 he developed the anthrax vaccine.

Louis Pasteur

Pele

For example, Jupiter and Saturn are both retrograde in Pele’s chart. Pele ran Saturn dasha from 1978 to 1997. His fame, however, came in his Jupiter dasha from 1962 to 1978. Jupiter is of ordinary status if you ignore Retrograde. Pele’s chart shows how Jupiter’s retrograde status made his Jupiter dasha memorable. In 1962, Pele was the best-rated player in the world. Brazil won its second world cup in 1962. In 1966, Pele was the most famous footballer in the world. In 1970, Pele lead Brazil to its third world cup title.

Retrograde in Vedic Astrology

Retrograde in vedic astrology

What is retrograde in vedic astrology? How do you determine if a graha is retrograde? What are the effects of the graha being retrograde in a chart? These are the main questions we will answer in this blog.

What is Retrograde?

A graha is retrograde when it appears to move backward relative to the motion of the Earth. The concept only applies to the true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Sun and Moon are never retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde.

Retrograde is an astronomical phenomenon caused due to the different speeds with which the true planets go around the Sun relative to the speed of the Earth around the Sun. It is an application of the principle of Relative Motion. For example, consider a passenger on a train who sees another train moving in a parallel track in the same direction. If the other train is slower, the train would appear to move in the reverse direction when the faster train passes the slower train. You can experience the same concept observing cars on a freeway.

In the case of planets, we look at the angular speed from the Earth as the planets orbit the Sun. The angular speed of the planet is slower when it is closer to the Earth. As a result, the main point to note is that Retrograde implies that the planet is closer to the Earth.

How do you determine Retrograde?

You can use any vedic astrology software to determine is a planet is retrograde. In some software, the planet has an underscore to indicate Retrograde. In others, you will see an (R) after the planet to indicate Retrograde.

For the outer planets – Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn – you can also look at the position of the planet from the Sun to determine if the planet is retrograde. If the planet five (150 degrees) to nine (270 degrees) signs away from the Sun, the planet is retrograde.

What are the effects of Retrograde?

Retrograde adds strength to the planet. In Phala Deepika it is stated a debilitated planet that is retrograde can be considered exalted. This implies that Retrograde adds strength to the planet. If the planet is already exalted, Retrograde makes it more powerful. There is a notion that an exalted-retrograde planet will act like it is debilitated. This is, however, not true. There is no scriptural reference to confirm this claim. Chesta Bala, part of Shad Bala, also confirms that Retrograde adds strength. A planet that is Retrograde gets its full Chesta Bala.

The next question is whether the strength is for the good or the bad? This is dependent on whether the planet is benefic or malefic in a chart. If the planet is benefic in a chart, Retrograde will make it more benefic. If the planet is malefic in a chart, Retrograde will make it more malefic.

Is Retrograde Rare?

Retrograde is rare for some planets and not as rare for others.

  • Saturn
    • Number of days in each retrograde cycle = 140 days
    • Frequency = once a year
    • Probability of retrograde per year = 140/365 = 38%
  • Jupiter
    • Number of days in each retrograde cycle = 120 days
    • Frequency = once a year
    • Probability of retrograde per year = 120/365 = 33%
  • Mercury
    • Number of days in each retrograde cycle = 24 days
    • Frequency = 3-4 times a year (3.5 average)
    • Probability of retrograde per year = 24*3.5/365 = 23%
  • Mars
    • Number of days in each retrograde cycle = 80 days
    • Frequency = once every 2 years (0.5 average)
    • Probability of retrograde per year = 80*0.5/365 = 11%
  • Venus
    • Number of days in each retrograde cycle = 42 days
    • Frequency = once every 18 months (0.67 average)
    • Probability of retrograde per year = 42*0.67/365 = 8%

So, Venus retrograde is the rarest in a chart and Saturn retrograde is the most common.

Papa Kartari Yoga

Papa Kartari Yoga

Papa Kartari Yoga forms when natural malefics surround the ascendant. In other words, the 2nd and 12th houses from the ascendant are occupied by natural malefics. For this yoga, there should be malefics in both the 2nd and 12th houses. The idea is that your neighbors or neighborhood influence your behavior. A negative surrounding leads to a negative influence.

The negative effects of the yoga reduce if you also have benefics in the 2nd or 12th house. The negative effects of the yoga also reduce if natural benefics, especially Jupiter, aspect the 2nd or the 12th house. For the yoga to be fully malefic, the 2nd and 12th houses should not have natural benefics and should not be influenced by natural benefics.

A person with such a yoga is unhealthy, short-lived and has enemies.

The concept of Papa Kartari can be applied to any house. If malefics surround the 2nd house, this indicates problems related to 2nd house matters like family or wealth.

A clean Papa Kartari yoga is hard to find. It reduces the strength of the ascendant.

Indira Gandhi

Example chart – Indira Gandhi. Ketu and Mars surround the ascendant. There are no benefics in the 2nd or the 12th house. The only mitigating factor is the aspect of Venus on the 12th house.

Indira Gandhi

Subha Kartari Yoga

Subha Kartari Yoga

Subha Kartari Yoga forms when natural benefics surround the ascendant. In other words, the 2nd and 12th houses from the ascendant are occupied by natural benefics. For this yoga, there should be benefics in both the 2nd and 12th houses. The idea is that your neighbors or neighborhood influence your behavior. A positive surrounding leads to a positive influence.

The positive effects of the yoga reduce if you also have malefics in the 2nd or 12th house. The positive effects of the yoga also reduce if natural malefics aspect the 2nd or the 12th house. For the yoga to be fully benefic, the 2nd and 12th houses should not have natural malefics and should not be influenced by natural malefics.

A person with such a yoga is fearless, healthy, long lived and does not have enemies.

A clean Subha Kartari yoga is hard to find. It bolsters the strength of the ascendant.

Princess Charlotte

Example chart – Princess Charlotte (2nd child of William and Kate). Birth details used – May 2nd 2015, 8:34 am in London. All three natural benefics lend support to the ascendant. There are no natural malefics in the 2nd or 12th houses. There are two negative aspects – Saturn on the 12th house and Mars on the 2nd house.

Princess Charlotte

Mahabhagya Yoga

Mahabhagya Yoga

Mahabhagya yoga is one of the rare yogas where the combination is different for men and women. For men, the person is born during the day and the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon are in odd signs. For women, the person is born during the night and the Ascendant, Sun, and Moon are in even signs.

  • The odd signs are – Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius
  • The even signs are – Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces

The person with Mahabhagya yoga is immensely popular in public. He or she is very generous in giving gifts, is very fortunate, and possesses a very high reputation. This is an auspicious yoga. Another such auspicious yoga is Gauri yoga.

Indira Gandhi

For Example (Woman) – Indira Gandhi – night birth, Ascendant in Cancer, Sun in Scorpio, and Moon in Capricorn. Indira Gandhi was born in the prestigious Nehru family.
