Challenging Transits ahead in 2019 (esp. May – June)

On March 7th 2019 Rahu and Ketu transited into Gemini and Sagittarius respectively. Saturn is already in Sagittarius, making for some very challenging transits in the upcoming months. The Gemini-Sagittarius axis is especially challenged making it tough for people with Gemini (Mithuna) and Sagittarius (Dhanusu) Moon signs (rasis).

Here are some of the key dates:

  • March 7th 2019 – Rahu in Gemini; Ketu and Saturn in Sagittarius – beginning of the challenging period
  • March 29th 2019 – April 23rd 2019 – Jupiter is in Sagittarius providing some relief
  • May 6th 2019 – Mars enters Gemini. This starts a period with Rahu/Ketu, Saturn, and Mars in the Gemini/Sagittarius axis – that is four out of the five (except Sun) malefics having a party together!
  • May 19th 2019 – Ketu and Saturn are in the exact same degree. This is when their conjunction will be the most potent.
May 19th 2019
  • June 1st 2019 – Mercury joins the party in Gemini!
  • June 15th 2019 – Sun does not want to be left out and joins in Gemini. Now, ALL the malefics are in association with each other in the Gemini-Sagittarius axis.
  • June 18th 2019 – Moon comes in and out of this axis every 14 days. On June 18th 2019, seven of the nine grahas are in the Gemini-Sagittarius axis!
June 18th 2019
  • June 20th-22nd 2019 – Mercury and Mars leave the axis. This should start the cooling off period.
  • June 28th 2019 – Venus moves into Gemini
  • July 16th 2019 – Sun leaves Gemini
  • July 23rd 2019 – Venus leaves Gemini
  • November 11th 2019 – Jupiter moves into Sagittarius providing permanent relief
  • December 25th 2019 – we have six grahas (Saturn, Ketu, Jupiter, Mercury, Sun, Moon) in Sagittarius and Rahu in Gemini.
December 25th 2019
  • January 24th 2020 – Saturn moves to Capricorn marking the end of this difficult period.

So, what does all this mean? There could be some major macro-economical events in the upcoming months. Financial or political setbacks are very possible. Stay away from risky investments and play it safe through the rest of this year.

Similar transits in a prior period:

June 10th 1973 to May 26th 1974 – Saturn and Ketu in Gemini and Rahu in Sagittarius. This period also had the other planets come in and out of this axis. The period was marked by the Watergate scandal (political) and the oil crisis (financial). Interestingly Mars never entered this axis during this period. This time around we have Mars involved as well.

June 16th 1973

Can Rahu Ketu be beneficial?

Can Rahu Ketu be beneficial? Rahu and Ketu are natural malefics and in general cause more difficulties. Many people turn towards god when they undergo suffering. This is a good thing and can help individuals deal with problems. Ketu, as a natural moksha karaka, can help turn suffering into something positive, by inculcating an interest in spirituality. Ketu’s maha dasa is also only 7 years. For these reasons Ketu is not as feared as Rahu. Rahu’s maha dasa, on the other hand, runs for 18 years. Rahu is also the brain of the Rahu/Ketu combination. Rahu can bring sudden rise and sudden fall when it influences the individual via dasa-bukthi or transits.

Can rahu ketu be beneficial

So, is a Rahu maha dasa always bad? For material pursuits, Rahu can be very beneficial for some individuals. Donald Trump became the President of the United States of America during his Rahu maha dasa. When Rahu is well placed in a chart, it can act as a super-yogakaraka. Rahu will help you achieve your dreams even if it means using unethical means. Other grahas follow the laws of dharma and will only give benefits within the confines of dharma. Rahu is the only graha that can break rules to deliver success.

Rahu can be beneficial in the following scenarios. The more the scenarios the stronger the beneficial results of Rahu. The scenarios for Rahu also apply to Ketu.

Beneficial scenarios for Rahu and Ketu

  • House position – Rahu does well in 3, 6, and 11th houses.
  • House types – Rahu and Ketu work positively when they are in Kendras because of the general principle – malefics do well in Kendras.
  • Rasi position – There isn’t an unanimous consensus on this, however, Rahu does well in the houses owned by Saturn, Venus, and Mercury. Ketu does well in the houses owned by Jupiter and Mars.
  • Enemies – Sun and Moon are arch enemies. Rahu and Ketu don’t give beneficial results in Cancer and Leo. Rahu and Ketu, also, don’t give beneficial results if they are conjunct or aspected by Sun or Moon.
  • Aspects – The conjunction or aspect of a natural benefic, especially Jupiter, reduces the malefic nature of Rahu and Ketu.
  • House lord – Rahu and Ketu act like the lord of the houses they reside in. If the lord’s impact is beneficial then Rahu/Ketu’s impact will also be beneficial. Example, if Rahu is in Sagittarius, and Jupiter (the lord) is in Pisces, then the Rahu will act like Jupiter. This will be beneficial, if Jupiter is beneficial for the chart, like for a Pisces ascendant.
  • Conjunct grahas – Rahu and Ketu also act like the grahas that are conjunct with them. If the conjunct grahas are beneficial, Rahu/Ketu will be beneficial.
  • Trikona Lords – Rahu and Ketu act beneficially if they are conjunct with or aspected by the Trikona (1, 5, 9) lords.
  • Yoga Karaka – Rahu and Ketu can become yoga karakas if they are in Kendras and are aspected by Trikona lords or if they are in Trikonas and are aspected by Kendra lords.

Yogakarakas including Rahu/Ketu

Yogakarakas

Yogakarakas are grahas that give very auspicious results to the natal chart. These grahas are “karakas” for “yoga”. Grahas become yogakarakas because of their lordships or their placement. The accepted definitions by all books are

  1. By lordship – Any graha that owns a Kendra (1,4,7,10) house and a Trikona (1,5,9) house, simultaneously will be a yogakaraka.
  2. By position – Two planets that are in Kendra from the lagna, and are in their own sign or sign of exaltation, work together to become yogakarakas for the natal chart. The grahas are co-workers.
  3. By position (mostly accepted) – If the two planets are in mutual Kendras and in their own sign or sign of exaltation, but not in Kendras from the lagna, then too, they can work together to become yogakarakas for the natal chart. The grahas are co-workers.
  4. Rahu and Ketu can become yogakarakas if
    • they are in Kendra and are conjunct or aspected by a Trikona lord.
    • they are in Trikona and are conjunct or aspected by a Kendra lord.

Examples by lordship

  1. By Lordship – for example, Saturn is the yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra ascendants. Another example, Mars is the yogakaraka for Cancer and Leo ascendants. Finally, Venus is the yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants.

Examples by position

2. By position – grahas that are in Kendras from the ascendant (lagna) would automatically be in mutual Kendras from each other. There can be many examples for this.

3. By position (mostly accepted) – this is similar to the above case with the exception that the grahas are not in Kendras from the ascendant (lagna).

Rahu and Ketu

4. Rahu and Ketu – The strength of the yoga is enhanced if the graha aspecting Rahu/Ketu is exalted or in its own sign. Please refer to the blog on how to analyse the strength of yogas for more details.

2019 is shaping out to be the year for Libra (Tula) and Cancer (Kataka) Moon Rasis

Vedic astrology uses dasas and transits to determine good and bad periods in a person’s life. In the dasa system we look at grahas at three levels – maha dasa, antar dasa, and pratyantar dasa. Among these, the graha running the maha dasa is the most important. The dasa analysis is done from the individual’s lagna or ascendant. In transits we mainly look at the transits of Saturn, Rahu/Ketu, and Jupiter. Transit analysis is done from the Moon sign.

To create a mathematical model, we can give the following weights to each of these grahas

30% – maha dasa graha

20% – antar dasa graha

10% – pratyantar dasa graha

Saturn transit – 10%

Jupiter transit – 10%

Rahu/Ketu transit – 10%

Transits of the other grahas or transit of the maha dasa graha – 10%

So, the transits can account for 30 – 40% of the influence on a person.

In 2018, people with Kumbha rasi benefited the most from the transits getting the full 30% benefit from Saturn, Jupiter, and Rahu/Ketu transits. If their maha dasa lord and antar dasa lord where also strong, they would have had a spectacular year.

Jupiter will transit on Oct 11th 2018 from Libra to Scorpio. Rahu/Ketu will transit on Mar 7th 2019. Let us look at the rasis that benefit the most from these transits.

Graha Good Houses Neutral Houses Bad Houses
Jupiter 2,5,7,9,11 1,4,10 3,6,8,12
Saturn 3,6,11 5,7,9,10 1,2,4,8,12
Rahu/Ketu 3,6,10,11 1,4,7 2,5,8,9,12
Oct 11 2018 to Mar 7 2019 Mar 8 2019 to Nov 4th 2019
Rasi Jupiter Transit Rahu Transit Ketu Transit Saturn Transit Overall Rasi Jupiter Transit Rahu Transit Ketu Transit Saturn Transit Overall
Aries -5% Aries -5%
Taurus 5% Taurus -10%
Gemini -20% Gemini -10%
Cancer 20% Cancer 20%
Leo 0% Leo 0%
Virgo -20% Virgo -15%
Libra 25% Libra 20%
Scorpio -10% Scorpio -20%
Sagittarius -30% Sagittarius -20%
Capricorn 0% Capricorn 0%
Aquarius 10% Aquarius 15%
Pisces 10% Pisces 15%

Total is calculated giving +10% for Saturn and Jupiter in “green”, -10% for Saturn and Jupiter in “red”, +5% for Rahu/Ketu in “green”, -5% for Rahu/Ketu in “red”, and 0% for cells in “grey”.

Clearly, Cancer and Libra Moon signs benefit the most. It would be tough year for Sagittarius Moon signs.
