All grahas in one sign

All grahas in one sign

On December 27th 2019, six grahas were in Sagittarius and Rahu was in Gemini. This made me curious about the rarity of all grahas in one sign.

In vedic astrology Rahu and Ketu cannot be in one sign. Therefore, the maximum conjunction we can have is of eight grahas in one sign. If Rahu is part of the conjunction then Ketu would be on the opposite sign. Likewise, if Ketu is part of the conjunction then Rahu would be on the opposite side.

So, how rare is it to have eight grahas (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Rahu/Ketu) in one sign? Turns out this is very rare. We have had only two such occurrences in the last 2,000 years (since 1 AD). The first one was on June 1st 531 AD and the second one was more recent, on February 4th 1962.

February 4th 1962

Luckily nothing catastrophic happened on February 4th, 1962 or a couple of weeks before or after it. Later in the year, we had the Cuban missile crisis, which many believe brought the world to the brink of a nuclear war. I did not find much information about world events in 531 AD.

If we look at just all the visible grahas in one sign, there were four more occurrences in the last 2,000 years. This means that Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were in one sign.

  • July 2nd, 710
  • August 16th, 1007
  • September 14th, 1186
  • April 3rd, 1821

Looking into the next 1,000 years, we have only one occurrence in 2,516 – November 26th, 2516. On this date, the seven visible grahas are in Scorpio, but Rahu and Ketu are not part of this conjunction.

In conclusion, all grahas in one sign is extremely rare. Also, there is no indication that this pattern foretells disaster.
