Virinchi Yoga

When Jupiter, Saturn, and the 5th lord are strong – in their sign of exaltation, own sign, or a friend’s sign, and all three occupy kendra or trikona positions we get Virinchi yoga.

People with Virinchi yoga are extremely intelligent, spiritual, happy at heart, and are full of good qualities. The yoga bestows long life, complete control over senses, and reverence from Kings. He or she will have many distinguished disciples and will shine with spiritual luster. He or she will be sweet and noble in his speech and will be blessed with wealth, wife, and children. This yoga combines the strength of the purva-punya house (5th house), the graha signifying dharma (Jupiter), and the enforcer of dharma (Saturn).

Lord Rama’s chart is a perfect example of this yoga. He is the epitome of dharma and spirituality.

  • Jupiter – exalted in the 1st house (kendra)
  • Saturn – exalted in the 4th house (kendra)
  • Lord of the 5th house is Mars, which is exalted in the 7th house (kendra)

Virinchi yoga is part of a triad of yogas – Srikantha, Srinatha, and Virinchi. All three yogas need three planets to be in strong positions and in Kendra and Trikona. Srikantha relates more to power, Srinatha relates more to money, and Virinchi relates more to intelligence.

Srinatha Yoga

When Venus, Mercury, and the lord of the 9th are strong – in their sign of exaltation, own sign, or a friend’s sign, and all three occupy kendra or trikona positions we get Srinatha yoga.

Srinatha yoga bestows wealth, splendor, and respect from others. They have a virtuous spouse and noble children. The person’s speech is soft, pleasant, and witty. This yoga combines the house of fortune (9th house) with the graha signifying luxuries and the graha signifying intellect and business. This makes for a very fortunate person blessed with wealth and intellect.

Srinatha Yoga
Bill Gates

Bill Gates’ chart is the perfect example of this yoga. He is wealthy, soft-spoken, and respected by others. He has a virtuous wife and good children.

  • Venus is in its own house in the 5th house (trikona)
  • Mercury is in its own house in the 4th house (kendra)
  • The 9th lord is Saturn, which is exalted in the 5th house (trikona)

Srinatha yoga is part of a triad of yogas – Srikantha, Srinatha, and Virinchi. All three yogas need three planets to be in strong positions and in Kendra and Trikona. Srikantha relates more to power, Srinatha relates more to money, and Virinchi relates more to intelligence.

Srikantha Yoga

The most important grahas in a chart are the lord of the lagna (lagnesh) and the luminaries – Sun and Moon. When all three are strong – in their sign of exaltation, own sign, or a friend’s sign, and all are in kendra or trikona houses – the chart has Srikantha Yoga.

People with Srikantha yoga will be very liberal, will be a friend of the virtuous, and will have no animosity against any other religious beliefs. He or she will become influential and will have a pure heart.

Sasa Mahapurusha Yoga

Saturn
Saturn

There are five mahapurusha yogas, collectively called Pancha mahapurusha yogas. The five true planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – create each of the five mahapurusha yogas. Saturn forms the Sasa mahapurusha yoga. There are two requirements for this yoga

  1. Saturn is in its own sign or in its sign of exaltation
  2. Saturn is in a kendra (1,4,7,10) house from the lagna (ascendant) or the Moon

Mahapurusha yogas pertain to success achieved through action. Therefore, classical texts indicate Kendras because they are the houses of action. If the yoga repeats from the ascendant and the Moon it is doubly strong because it indicates confluence. It is a strong placement even if the planet is in a trikona (5,9) house.

The qualities of the yoga are directly related to the qualities of Saturn. Therefore, one born with Sasa mahapurusha yoga will have good servants, will be strong, and will be the head of a village or a King. Saturn is malefic in nature, so he will be wicked by nature and will associate with women not his own. He will be inclined to use other’s wealth and will be happy. Not all the qualities are good because Saturn is a malefic graha.

Examples of this yoga are Elvis Presley, Catherine the Great, and King Henry VIII. All of them were Kings or Queens, had many servants, and associated with many from the opposite sex.

Catherine the Great

Karako Bhava Nasti – Exceptions

Karako bhava nasti is an interesting and counter intuitive concept in vedic astrology. Karako derives from the word “karak” or doer/significator. Every graha signifies something. For example, Sun signifies the father. Moon signifies the mother… Every bhava or house also signifies something. For example, the 9th house signifies the father and the 4th house signifies the mother. You would assume having the Sun in the 9th or the Moon in the 4th would enhance the appropriate significance because the graha and the house signify the same thing. However, the “karako bhava nasti” principle states that the significance will be destroyed (nasti). Too much of anything can be harmful!

There are, however, exceptions to this rule. The exceptions are

  1. Graha is exalted or in its own sign – fully cancels the negative effect. Jupiter in Pisces for a Scorpio lagna or Moon in Cancer for an Aries lagna.
  2. Graha is retrograde – fully cancels the negative effect.
  3. Jupiter conjuncts or aspects the affected house – reduces the negative effect depending on how strong Jupiter is.
  4. Trikona lords (1,5,9) conjuncts or aspects the house – reduces the negative effect depending on how strong the Trikona lords are.

This concept is used mainly for relations. It could mean troubled relationships, separation, or friction in general.

  • Sun in 9th (bad for father)
  • Moon in 4th (bad for mother)
  • Mars in 3rd (bad for siblings)
  • Venus in 7th (bad for wife)
  • Jupiter in 5th (bad for children)

Rahul Gandhi

Karako bhava nasti
Rahul Gandhi

In Rahul Gandhi’s chart we have Venus in the 7th house. This affects his relationship with his wife. Rahul Gandhi has not married.

Sean Penn

Sean Penn

In Sean Penn’s chart Sun is in the 9th house. This technically is “karako bhava nasti” indicating troubles with his dad. However, his chart has many of the exceptions that are highlighted above. Sun is in its own sign in Leo. A strong Jupiter aspects the 9th house. The lords of the 1st and 5th house (Jupiter and Mars) also aspect the 9th house. Sean Penn appears to have had a great relationship with his father.

Nabhasa Yogas

Star Patterns

Nabhasa yogas are formed based on the spatial distribution of the grahas in the sky. These yogas exclude Rahu and Ketu because they are not real or visible objects in the sky. Therefore, these yogas are formed by the distribution of the seven true grahas – Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn – in the vedic chart. Nabhasa yogas form backdrops in one’s life and their effects can be felt throughout, in all the dasa periods.

These yogas do not consider the strength of the grahas and so, are not considered important by many. However, many of these yogas are statistically rare and should be given their due importance. The most common of these yogas are the Sankhya yogas. The number of signs occupied by the seven grahas determines the Sankhya yoga. Therefore, there are seven such yogas one for each of the 7 possibilities – all 7 grahas can be in 1 sign, in 2 signs, … , in 7 signs. Every vedic chart will have one of the Sankhya yogas – especially Kedara(4), Paasa(5), and Dama(6) are very common. That is why it is said that Sankhya yogas should be ignored if any of the other Nabhasa yogas are present.

There are 32 of these yogas, based on the distribution of the 7 grahas (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) in the 12 signs/houses. There are three Asraya yogas (3), two Dala yogas (2), twenty Akriti yogas (20), and seven Sankhya yogas (7). You can click the headings below to get more details about the sets of yogas including their results and example charts.

Asraya Yogas (3)

Placement of the 7 grahas in movable, fixed, or dual signs form these yogas. All three yogas give good results.

  • Rajju – all grahas in movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
  • Musala – all grahas in fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
  • Nala – all grahas in dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)

Dala (2) and Akriti (20) yogas

Placement of the seven grahas in specific houses form these yogas. Some of these look at the placement of benefics and malefics in specific houses, while the rest look at the placement of all the seven grahas in specific houses. Thirteen of the 22 give good results, while the other nine give bad results.

  • Looking at the placement of benefics and malefics
    • Maala – benefics occupy 3 angles/Kendra houses
    • Bhujanga or Sarpa – malefics occupy 3 angles
    • Vajra – all benefics in (1,7) or all malefics in (4,10)
    • Yava – all benefics in (4,10) or all malefics in (1,7)
  • Looking at the placement of all seven grahas
    • Gada – all grahas in 2 successive angles (1,4) or (4,7) or (7,10) or (10,1)
    • Sakata – all grahas in (1,7)
    • Vihaga – all grahas in (4,10)
    • Kamala – all grahas in 4 angles (1,4,7,10)
    • Sringataka – all grahas in 3 trikonas (1,5,9)
    • Vapi – all grahas in (2,5,8,11) or (3,6,9,12)
    • Hala – all grahas in (2,6,10) or (3,7,11) or (4,8,12)
    • Ardha Chandra – all grahas in (6,8,12)
    • Yupa – all grahas in 4 consecutive houses starting from the 1st (1-4)
    • Sara – all grahas in 4 consecutive houses starting from the 4th (4-7)
    • Sakthi – all grahas in 4 consecutive houses starting from the 7th (7-10)
    • Danda – all grahas in 4 consecutive houses starting from the 10th (10-1)
    • Nauka – all grahas in 7 consecutive houses starting from the 1st (1-7)
    • Koota – all grahas in 7 consecutive houses starting from the 4th (4-10)
    • Chatra – all grahas in 7 consecutive houses starting from the 7th (7-1)
    • Chapa– all grahas in 7 consecutive houses starting from the 10th (10-4)
    • Chakra – all grahas in odd houses (1,3,5,7,9,11)
    • Samudra – all grahas in even houses (2,4,6,8,10,12)

Sankya yogas (7)

These are the most common and should be ignored if any of the other Nabhasha yogas are present. Kedara to Veena give good results, while Gola to Soola give bad results, implying that a cluster of grahas is a sign of weakness.

  • Gola – all grahas in 1 sign
  • Yuga – all grahas in 2 signs
  • Soola – all grahas in 3 signs
  • Kedara – all grahas in 4 signs
  • Paasa – all grahas in 5 signs
  • Dama – all grahas in 6 signs
  • Veena – all grahas in 7 sign
